This experiment will allow children to see how and how many seeds germinate.&nbsp; The plastic bag acts as a window into the world of plant growth!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Fold the paper towel so it will fit neatly inside the plastic bag.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Using a black permanent marker, draw a 10 frame on the bag.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fill the spray bottle with water and let children mist the paper towel until it is completely moist.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Place the wet paper towel in the bag.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have the children place one bean seed in each compartment in the 10 frame.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Close the bag and set it flat near a window or other sunny area. Explain your answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">MATH CONNECTIONS:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Write a prediction on how many bean seeds you believe will germinate.&nbsp; You many guess numbers between 0 and 10. After plants have germinated check your predictions.&nbsp; Discuss the results.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Can you figure out the percentage or germination rate of your bean seeds?&nbsp; Take the number of bean seeds in your bag that germinated.&nbsp; Use a calculator and times that number by 10.&nbsp; If 8 seeds germinated, you would take 8 x 10 = 80.&nbsp; Your seeds would have an 80% germination rate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Why do you think knowing a seeds germination rate would be helpful to a farmer?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><em>NOTE: Bean seeds germinated in this way \u201cmay\u201d grow if you place them in a soil garden area shortly after germination begins. Often teachers will allow the bean plants to continue growing until leaves form so that students can see the plants growing.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bean Seed Germination Experiment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Facts about Beans <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A bean seed will grow into a bean plant.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The plant will produce blossoms that will turn into beans.&nbsp; If left to mature. The beans will contain 5-6 bean seeds that can be re-planted.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Some bean seeds are white, red, brown, or black.&nbsp; We have even planted red speckled bean seeds.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The roots and stem will come out of the seed.&nbsp; When this happens, it is called \u2013 germination.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Roots go down from the bean seed into the earth due to gravity.&nbsp; They help the bean plant absorb water and nutrients from the soil.&nbsp; You will see this in the first few days of your grow a bean maze experiment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Even if you plant the seed upside down, the roots will \u201cturn themselves\u201d back the right way.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The stem, or shoot, will go upwards in search of sunlight and air.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Germination Science Experiment Vocabulary<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Germination<\/u>:<\/strong> &nbsp;when the seed begins to grow a root and a shoot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Root<\/u>:&nbsp;<\/strong> Part of the plant beneath the soil that absorbs water and nutrients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Sprout<\/u>:<\/strong> the beginning growth of a plant<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Sprouting<\/u>:<\/strong> the practice of germinating seeds<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We all know that plants need water, sun, and soil to grow.
