From early on in her toddler years we noticed she would have temper tantrums over simple things if there weren\u2019t just so. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bedtime has been a challenge over the years. So has getting ready for school with hair done and the right clothes. Getting her to eat her food can be challenging too. Sometimes a trip to the store can become a power struggle over a toy we didn\u2019t need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Does this sound at all like your child?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">On the <\/span>brighter side of things, I\u2019ve also watched<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"> her create amazing designs and stories with great determination. Become an amazing big sister and little sister by helping and loving her sister and brother. I\u2019ve observed her expressing herself and her wants and needs to our family and to her friends.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Having a child with a strong voice is a good thing.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Having a child who feels deeply about things lets you know they are connected. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">I think she is one of the most special people I&#8217;ve ever met and love her to the moon and back and can&#8217;t wait to see her as she grows and matures! <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">My hope is that one day she will use these skills in some type of leadership role.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/theeducatorsspinonit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/09050440e462464ecc5e77a912a053b2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/theeducatorsspinonit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/09050440e462464ecc5e77a912a053b2.jpg\" alt=\"8 Tips for Raising a Strong Willed Child from The Educators' Spin On It \" style=\"width:600px;height:698px\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><b><em>What gifts do you see in your child?<\/em><\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">However, with all that being said, we still need her to follow our rules and maintain self-control in our home and when we\u2019re out and about. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">We\u2019ve come up with 8 simple things that are working to give her the environment she needs to make her feel that she has a choice and does have power in her daily life. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Most power struggles begin from a child feeling that they are not in control which is something they seek very early on as a form of independence. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><strong>Ask yourself&#8230;<\/strong>What are some ways to help your child feel like they are \u201cin control\u201d and have \u201ca voice\u201d even though you as the parent are in control of the environment and rules? <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Managing <a href=\"https:\/\/mommyevolution.com\/calm-down-big-feelings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">big feelings<\/a> can be a challenge. We&#8217;ve found a few helpful <a href=\"https:\/\/aheartforallstudents.com\/emotional-regulation-activities-for-kids\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">emotional regulation activities for kids<\/a> that are helping. Keep your Calm Voice<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">First of all, keep your cool when you sense that Strong Willed Child expressing those needs and wants in an uncontrolled way. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">When children sense you\u2019re being affected by their behavior they will continue because that means it\u2019s working and they just might get their way, whether it\u2019s good or bad behavior, if it\u2019s working they\u2019ll keep doing it.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also vocalize what you see their body language doing so that they become conscious of it too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Be a good listener. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"2-2-create-positive-choices-using-consistent-rules-\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\">2. Create Positive Choices using Consistent Rules<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Create an environment of positive choices. If you want them to pick up the toys and they are refusing, give them a choice that still ends in the result you want. You might say \u201cYou can pick up the dolls or the princess stuff first?\u201d or \u201cIt\u2019s time to clean up. You can pick up the red ones or the yellow ones\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Either choice makes them have to clean up but you are giving her a choice which feels like power.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Be clear about your expectations and rules by talking about them when your child is listening and communicating calmly with you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most importantly praise and be your child&#8217;s biggest cheerleader! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"3-3-create-goals-together-and-chart-it-\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\">3. Create Goals Together and Chart It<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Whenever we observe an undesired behavior arising we try to resolve it by encouraging her to come up with a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1NqM1JY\" target=\"_blank\">Behavior Management Chart <\/a>. We sit down together on the computer and create a chart. She helps us to write the rule and theme. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Then we print it out and she decorates it and hangs it up. We\u2019ve created it together and she feels that she\u2019s had a voice, a part of the control that she\u2019s seeking. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">All it takes is a week or two with the chart and we\u2019ve seen a big improvement with that specific behavior issue. It\u2019s worked for staying in her bed at night, combing her hair, watching TV, cleaning up toys, eating her food, controlling temper tantrums. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Truthfully it\u2019s worked over the years in my classrooms and it very easily works at home. Create Structure and Routine<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">We\u2019ve found that she functions much better when things were told in advance and structured for her. When she knows the weekly schedule and the daily schedule she\u2019s easily able to predict what\u2019s going to happen next. Children thrive on structure in their lives and the predictability of it. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"5-5-pick-your-focus-keeping-safety-first-\"><strong>5. Pick your Focus Keeping Safety First<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;ve also learned that you have to pick your battles with a strong willed child. First and foremost safety first and there are no exceptions to those rules. However in order to successfully experience each day with your child, sometimes you have to focus on a specific area and reach that goal before you can address other goals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"6-6-create-the-art-of-distraction-\"><b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\">6. Create the Art of Distraction<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">We\u2019ve found that distraction can help to prevent some strong willed behaviors. Take Care of Basic Needs First<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">We\u2019ve learned to ask ourselves 3 questions when we find our child choosing a strong willed behavior. Are they tired? Are they hungry? Are they getting enough attention from me? Many times the whole situation could have been avoided if we made sure these simple needs were met. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Think of those outbursts at the park, on vacation or at Disney and you just can\u2019t understand why, and then you realize they are off their schedules, haven\u2019t had a nap, and did not eat all their breakfast. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><strong>Yeap\u2026<\/strong> basic needs first.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"8-8-create-simple-systems-that-are-predictable-\"><strong>8. Create Simple Systems that are Predictable<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">We had trouble getting ready for school with choosing outfits that she wanted to wear. As you know most 4 &amp; 5 year old girls would wear a dress every single day if they could, plus we had to deal with uniforms this year too.
