We will be taking you on a journey around the world, exploring 12 different countries with our children, by cooking 12 dishes with them. One for each country we visit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We started our journey the same way Phileas Fogg did in London, UK, and Stockholm, Sweden continued on to Moscow in Russia and then, New Delhi, capital of the exotic sub-continent of India!&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our stop this month is in Japan! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No time for a Disney Vacation this week?&nbsp;Travel there virtually, by stopping over at National Geographic for Kids website for <a href=\"https:\/\/kids.nationalgeographic.com\/explore\/countries\/japan\/\">kid friendly pictures and facts about Japan.<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is another site with facts for kids and lots about <a href=\"https:\/\/web-japan.org\/kidsweb\/cook\/index.html\">Japanese food<\/a>!<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/theeducatorsspinonit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/IMG_7902-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/theeducatorsspinonit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/IMG_7902.jpg\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:605px;height:451px\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Making Sushi at Home with Kids<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For our Japanese Cooking adventure, we decided to try Hand Rolled Sushi with a build-your-own Sushi Bar. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inspired by one of our favorites, this <a href=\"https:\/\/theschmidtywife.com\/homemade-california-roll\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">California Roll Recipe<\/a>.  <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/theeducatorsspinonit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/aJuneMNTrip-2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/theeducatorsspinonit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/aJuneMNTrip-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:601px;height:750px\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>I thought this would be a great way to get the kids in the kitchen cooking AND another way to offer healthy vegetables.&nbsp; The book, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Cooks-Journey-Japan-Homestyle-Japanese\/dp\/4805310111?crid=3Q0VXD4475B7C&amp;keywords=a+cooks+journey+to+japan&amp;qid=1642696411&amp;s=books&amp;sprefix=a+cooks+journey+to+japan+%2Cstripbooks%2C98&amp;sr=1-1&amp;linkCode=ll1&amp;tag=thedsponit02-20&amp;linkId=bdc2703f83f93ff059c0fd2cbc284319&amp;language=en_US&amp;ref_=as_li_ss_tl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">A Cook&#8217;s Journey to Japan<\/a>,&#8221; by Sarah Marx Feldner provided us with a guide on how to make Sushi Rice, the ingredients needed, and the directions on how to make them!&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pictures in this book are gorgeous and the explanations of ingredients and directions are easy to follow &#8211; even if I didn&#8217;t know where to buy them all!&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For those of you experienced Sushi rollers &#8211; this probably seems like a no-brainer to you.&nbsp; I am not at all an expert, rather, I am the most novice Asian chef ever.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This was a challenge for me and completely different from the type of cooking I am used to!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next time I think this <a href=\"https:\/\/thegourmetbonvivant.com\/poke-bowl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Pok\u00e9 Bowl (with Spicy Mayo)<\/a> would be fun to make too with the kids. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/theeducatorsspinonit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/eIMG_9094-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/theeducatorsspinonit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/eIMG_9094.jpg\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:600px;height:502px\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>I was pretty excited when my rice turned out to look just like the pictures of hers on page 29!&nbsp; It is the small things in life that bring joy =)&nbsp; I sent the kids out to pick the herbs that we had available in the garden.&nbsp;It called for optional Shiso leaves, but I don&#8217;t know that herb, so I am pretty sure it didn&#8217;t grow in our garden!&nbsp;We opted for chives and cilantro as a substitute! &nbsp;We tried Basil in a few, but the flavor was not right!<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/theeducatorsspinonit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/eIMG_9097-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/theeducatorsspinonit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/eIMG_9097.jpg\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:602px;height:875px\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Since we are visiting Grandma and Grandpa, they joined in the fun too!&nbsp; It was REALLY nice having a couple extra hands to help in the kitchen!&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We brought out our book to show the kids the connection between what we were making and the cookbook. (The kids also went to the library with us to pick out a stack of Japanese Cookbooks.) My mom read through the steps and we followed her, well, Sarah&#8217;s instructions.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/theeducatorsspinonit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/eIMG_9102-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/theeducatorsspinonit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/eIMG_9102.jpg\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:601px;height:401px\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Our rolls didn&#8217;t turn out as pretty as store-bought ones, but they were yummy and a little more budget friendly!\u00a0My 5 year old built and ate 2 rolls.\u00a0My 2-year-old said, &#8220;This is yucky.\u00a0Me no like it.&#8221; and proceeded to spit it out on his plate!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;ll also be making a special <a href=\"https:\/\/www.savoryexperiments.com\/salmon-poke-bowls\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">poke bowl<\/a> next time too. Made with sushi-grade salmon, white rice, fresh cucumber, creamy avocado, and fresh mango, these poke bowls are a perfectly easy DIY sushi night at home.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/theeducatorsspinonit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/IMG_9116-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/theeducatorsspinonit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/IMG_9116.jpg\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:602px;height:450px\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Suspecting that this may be his opinion, we didn&#8217;t count on Sushi to be our only Japanese dish.
