The comment was actually made in regards to what was being sent in lunch boxes by some parents. After teaching for many years and volunteering in the lunch room, I've seen quite a range of what is being offered in a child's lunch box unfortunately.I do think there are some great efforts happening in schools to provide healthy options for students. I encourage my daughter to pick at least one meal a week from the school's lunch program as well.

This makes my heart SO happy. Right now, the low-income schools have included a fresh fruit option. I do have lunch with my daughter and have seen that although they may have made changes, the sugar and sodium content in what I've seen offered is CRAZY. I love that my kids enjoy fresh fruit and vegetables in their packed lunches. Isn't it great that we all have these choices! I look forward to seeing more schools follow suit in offering more healthy options!

I take exception to that comment. I work as a cafeteria manager and we only serve healthy choices. We have a fresh salad bar every day (and the kids love it) we have different entrees every day with protein and vegetables and fruit. We do not serve junk food. Michelle Obama is the one to thank for this. She has made it her goal to do away with childhood obesity and has been able to get a lot of input into what is served at our public schools. The cafeteria food is so much more nutritious than it was several years ago. Go into your school cafeteria and try the food or at least look at it. You will see that it is much different now.
