Rainbow Themed Week

Our Weekly Virtual Book Club for Kids has some fun weekly themes and I must admit rainbow week is one of my favorites to do with preschoolers and toddlers. There’s something quite magical about a rainbow to kids and adults alike!  Grab a prism (like this one on Amazon) and explore how you can make your very own rainbow with sunlight.

In the story How the Crayons Saved the Rainbow  the Sun and the Clouds are best friends. Together they keep the world warm, the gardens growing, and the sky full of beautiful rainbows. However one day they get into a fight and refuse to be in the sky together. Which you can only guess means there are no longer any rainbows.

In the story, you discover that without rainbows, the colors start disappearing until Earth was left with no color … except for one little forgotten box of crayons in one little school desk. You’ll have to read with your preschooler to see how they solve this problem.

How the Crayons Saved the Rainbow teaches the importance of teamwork and perseverance through the eyes of some very colorful crayons.

After reading the story you’ll want to do some rainbow activities with your child and I’ve gathered some of my favorites just for you! Here’s a few more rainbow books to read too!

Rainbow Activities for Preschoolers

Preschool Learning with Rainbows

Rainbow activities provide a fun and hands-on way for preschoolers to learn several key concepts, including:

  • Color Recognition: By exploring the colors of the rainbow, children improve their ability to identify and name different colors. This is an important skill in early childhood development.
  • Fine Motor Skills: Many rainbow activities involve cutting, drawing, or arranging colorful objects, which helps develop fine motor skills as children practice hand-eye coordination and dexterity.
  • Creativity and Imagination: Working with bright colors and a variety of materials encourages creativity. Preschoolers can experiment with different ways to create their own rainbow art and crafts, fostering imaginative thinking.
  • Science Concepts: Rainbow activities provide opportunities to explore basic science concepts like light, rain, and the color spectrum. For example, children can learn how rainbows form through simple experiments or discussions about weather.
  • Math Skills: Sorting, counting, and organizing rainbow-colored objects can help with early math skills like pattern recognition, sequencing, and understanding more or less.
  • Language Development: As preschoolers talk about the colors, shapes, and patterns they see in their rainbow activities, they build their vocabulary and improve their communication skills.
  • Sensory Development: Rainbow activities often involve sensory play with various textures, such as soft fabric, shiny paper, or smooth paint, providing opportunities for sensory exploration.

Overall, rainbow activities offer a rich learning experience that supports cognitive, physical, and emotional development in preschoolers.

Are you ready for some fun with colorful rainbow activities?

Whether they’re painting vibrant masterpieces, making rainbow-themed snacks, or discovering light and color through STEM activities, these ideas will spark creativity and curiosity.

Rainbow activities, crafts, and science experiments offer grade school children a fun way to learn about important concepts across multiple subjects. Through hands-on play, they can explore:

  • Science & STEM – Kids can learn about light refraction, color mixing, and the science behind rainbows by experimenting with prisms, water, and sunlight. Simple experiments like making a walking water rainbow teach about absorption and color blending.

Tips for Easy Rainbow Activities for Busy Parents

As a busy parent, you want after-school activities that are fun, engaging, and easy to set up. Here are some additional tips to make rainbow-themed activities even more enjoyable and stress-free:

  1. Keep a “Rainbow Kit” Ready
Stock a small bin with basic supplies like colored paper, markers, watercolors, cotton balls, and glue. Having everything in one place makes it easy to grab and go when you need a quick activity.
  2. Incorporate Learning Naturally
Turn playtime into a learning experience! Ask open-ended questions like, “What happens when we mix these colors?” or “How do rainbows form?” to encourage curiosity and discussion.
  3. Take It Outside
If the weather is nice, bring the fun outdoors! Use sidewalk chalk to create rainbow art, blow colorful bubbles, or look for real rainbows after a rainy day.
  4. Use Everyday Items for Quick Fun
No special supplies? No problem! Try sorting cereal by color, making a rainbow snack tray, or using clothing to create a giant rainbow on the floor.
  5. Encourage Independence
Set up simple, low-mess activities kids can do on their own while you cook dinner or finish work. Print out a rainbow coloring sheet or set out watercolor paints for creative downtime.
  6. Capture the Moment
Take photos of your child’s creations to celebrate their creativity! You can even start a “Rainbow Art Wall” to display their colorful masterpieces.

By keeping activities simple, engaging, and flexible, you can turn after-school time into a fun and meaningful experience—without extra stress.

Create a fun and easy St. Patrick’s Day Craft for Kids as they explore STEM concepts with a Sensory Bottle! This St. Patrick’s Day STEM Activity uses magnets that are sure to discover GOLD or at least stir up some lucky shamrocks with kids!

This activity is a perfect addition to your after school fun or even part of your STEM education for preschooler.

Here’s how to add a little STEM this St. Patrick’s Day with Kids.

STEM St. Patrick's Day Sensory Bottle Activity for Kids

We wanted to add a little fun to this St. Patrick’s Day Discovery Bottle by adding an element of STEM learning.

What is STEM? It involves using Science, Technology, Engineering and Math and making them work together with what you know and what you can do with those skills to problem solve, evaluate and create new things.

For this project it’s encouraging even our littlest ones to begin their path of STEM learning through exploration by exploring magnetism.

Children are born speaking the language of science with their inherent ability to wonder, discover, explore and be curious. This activity encourage and fosters this sense of curiosity with a few items you can found around your house.

Are you ready to learn how to create this St. Patrick’s Day STEM Activity?

Materials Needed for Shamrock STEM Activity:

St. Patrick's Day STEM Activity focuses on Fine Motor Skills too

Directions for St. Patrick’s Day STEM Activity Sensory Bottle:

1. Find an empty recycled water bottle and fill it up with water. Leave a small portion of space to be filled with additional contents. SCIENCE:a good time to talk about water displacement.

2. Go around the house on a Leprechaun search to discover gold with your child. We added Shamrocks from an old necklace, golden jingle bells, pennies and gold glitter.

Be sure to encourage your child to find things that they think will be magnetic.

St. Patrick's Day STEM Activity Materials

3. Before adding items to the sensory bottle stop and having them count the items for some MATH fun. Consider making matches of items for even or odd numbers as you extend math into this activity.

4. As your child add the items talk about whether they think they will sink or float for more SCIENCE vocabulary and discovery.

Adding Gold to our St. Patrick's Day STEM Activity

5. Once all the items are added it’s time to add a little golden dust to sparkle in the sensory bottle. Now the bottle is done so you can close it up as tight as possible. If you want you can also hot glue it closed or tape it close to avoid any spills.

6. It’s time to explore with the St. Patrick’s Day Sensory Bottle. Give your child lots of time to shake and see what happens. Try rolling it on the table to see what happens next.

As you explore it’s time for SCIENCE by discussing the movement of the items and how they react with the water.

Shamrock Sensory Bottle a St. Patrick's Day STEM Activity

You’ll notice over time that this bottle will turn more golden because of the gold glitter. Take it outside to let the light bounce around the gold glitter more to make it even more magical.

7.Now it’s time to discover which items are magnetic. Challenge your child to find the items in the bottle that are attracted to the magnet. Depending on what you added to bottle the answers may change. Better yet think about surprising them in the night by adding a new magnetic element, perhaps the leprechauns could be mischievous and do so?

Finding Gold in this STEM themed St. Patrick's Day Activity for Kids

8. One big challenge it to see how many magnetic items you can capture at once. This is part of the ENGINEERING challenge. With increased magnetic force from a magnet your child may be able to capture more items if lined up strategically.

This will vary per age group how challenging you make it. Also challenge your little scientist to see if they can make the magnet hold onto the edge with them holding it.

9. Grab your cell phone and take a video of them demonstration the magnetic force to add an element of TECHNOLOGY to this STEM St. Patrick’s Day STEM Activity Project.

CHALLENGE

Next STEM challenge we’re going to add Corn Syrup or cheap Hair Gel to see how it changes the movement within our water bottle adding more SCIENCE fun to our Sensory Bottle as part of our STEM Education.

Looking for outdoor spring activities for the kids?  Create these playful shapes using shamrocks for a little St. Patrick’s Day fun this spring.

We’re always looking for a variety of ways to explore the outdoors with our children when they get home from school and on the weekends. The yard is our go to source that we try to visit each afternoon.

I’ve found that if we go outside after snack time once we get home from school my kids have a much better afternoon together, eat better at dinner and sleep better at night.

However, sometimes they are just not interested in just “playing” with the playground we have so I have to find ways to make it interesting.

Create shapes with shamrocks for St. Patrick's Day fun with Kids outdoors

Shape Shamrocks

This week we explore the clovers that were growing in near our yard and did a little fine motor fun with them. We created shapes and then glued the clovers around the perimeter. My two year old joined the fun by putting the clovers inside the shapes we drew which made it a great sibling activity.

child picking clovers for making shapes

We even hid a few gold coins below them to play scavenger hunts with each other as we got ready for St. Patrick’s Day.

Bird Watching and Story Writing

We also did some bird watching. We were so excited that one afternoon we watched several birds visit our birdbath and enjoy the water. My daughter even wrote a story about the bird that we watched. We observed a yellow finch, a cardinal, a mockingbird and a sweet little bluebird….do you know what kind this is?

Here’s some more fun ways to create a bird watching station in your yard.

Nature Walk and Journal Writing

We also took a walk in the neighborhood a few times to record in our Spring Journal and Observation Sheet.

Here are a few photos we took from our walks.

Ireland Recipes and Crafts for Kids

We are so excited to be traveling the world by cooking dishes from Around the World with our kids! We have set a new course for this season of Around with World in 12 Dishes that includes 12 new countries!

Come join us as we take our children on a trip around the world without ever leaving our homes, well maybe a little to grab a few groceries for cooking and a few books for learning about the world!

We’re traveling to Ireland: Grab a placemat

Print Paper Doll from Ireland

Background Info of Ireland

Let’s learn about Ireland by discovering a fact about the country through art and food!

Create a Celtic Knot

In many of the images from Ireland we noticed the patterns which are Celtic knots. We decided to learn what they were and how to make them. To make a Celtic Knot Cookie we practiced a little bit with play dough before we started so that we were familiar with the shapes and methods behind it.

This next week I hope to explore with my daughter how to draw them with some art lessons. They should appear that they have not beginning and no end so it will be quite a challenge and quite fun to learn how to do it.

Celtic Knot Patterns for Kids

There are a few tutorials online of how to create a Celtic knot that we’ll study first.

Making shortbread cookies with kids to create Celtic Knot

Using a few simple ingredients we took an icon of Ireland and created our very own delicious cookie version of a Celtic Knot! We combined butter, sugar, vanilla and flour to create yummy shortbread cookie dough.

This was the first time I let my 6 year old use my big KitchenAid Stand Mixer all by herself with supervision, she was so excited. We followed this Shortbread recipe from allrecipes.com.

Once our dough chilled a little bit we used a Cookie Press to create a line on dough that we were able to bend and form into a Celtic knot. You could also just roll the dough out into a snake shape then bend it into a Celtic Knot.

Here’s the original recipe that inspired me to create our own Celtic Knot Cookie.

Celtic Music

While we were in the kitchen forming Celtic Knots we had such fun listening to Irish and Celtic music podcast. I love bringing music from other regions into our home and transforming us into other places! Here’s a few that were fun to listen to.

We even had a little afternoon fun trying to learn how to Irish Step Dancing! Here’s a beginning tutorial. And special post about Irish Dancing from ABC and 123.

And you can’t miss Murray learning about Irish Dancing on Sesame Street!

Then we created a few fun crafts about Ireland while we enjoyed our shortbread cookies in the shape of Celtic Knots.
