If your kids are like mine they are very fascinated in trains. Freight Train by Donald Crews is a book that inspired my crew to create their very own DIY paper train for hours of play.

Here’s how to make your own.

This month we’re featuring Freight Train by Donald Crews for the Virtual Book Club for Kids. It’s a colorful and bright book that is inviting to babies, toddlers, preschoolers and even grade schoolers based on the extention activities you create. This activity just take 4 materials from around your house to create , a little bit of time to create and then you have your own train!

One of main focuses of this activity is to just play and have fun with the concept of a train with your child. Be creative who can the passengers be? They just might inspire a train story of your child’s own. Allow older kids to “create” their own train cards by using their engineering skills too.

Paper Train Tutorial for Kids

Freight Train by Donald Crews

To start this book themed fun with the Freight Train be sure to read the story together. As you’re reading discuss the various styles of trains and colors. This is one of those books that your child will quickly pick up and start to read on their own as well building confidence in their reading abilities.

Once you’ve read it a few times it’s time to create a TRAIN!

Materials

  • Colorful Cardstock or Construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Tape
  • Stuffed animals or plastic animals

Directions for Train

Create your own paper train using paper by folding in the sides on the paper on each side evenly. Approximately 1 inch worked best of our paper that was 81/2 by 11 inches. For little hands you can start the fold and have them help you push it down. For bigger kids let them experiment to create.

Once folded unfold the paper to expose the fold lines for your child. Have them cut on the line on two sides of the paper to create a place to fold the extra paper behind.

Fold paper in on each side to create the side of the train. Then tape on the interior and exterior for stability.

Cut out black circle for the wheels of your train cars and attach with glue. Perfect task for little hands to practice fine motor skills.

Now it’s time for creative play with your trains!  Find some special stuffed animals to ride in your train cars to retell the story!

There are so many fun ways to play with these little paper train cards that you’ve created from cardstock. We add stuffed animals to our for playtime. You could sort things by color just like the book or even create a number or alphabet train too.

Let your child discover a variety of ways to play with trains to move items.

Train Themed Games and Activities

I’ll be sharing MORE ideas soon for Trains to go with Freight Train. Here are quite a few more for a Train Themed Preschool Week with your child.

Head to the kitchen with these easy recipes for kids to make inspired by popular children’s books! Read a book and cook, for hours of fun and learning in the kitchen with your young chef.

Here are our top picks of ways to cook with books!

One of my favorite things to do is to bring my kids into the kitchen for some fun with cooking, especially when we’re on a break from school! We work together to make all sorts of things from baked goods to even main dishes. I love watching how it builds their confidence and their love for a variety of food.

There are so many benefits to cooking with your kids. Reading, Math, Science, Healthy Eating Habits, and even Geography are all happening in the kitchen while you’re cooking.

It’s even more fun when you include books in your plans that inspire you to make recipes together that bring books to life!

Here are my “Top 10 Ways We Cook with Books”!

1. Growing in the Garden

Encouraging your kids eat vegetables and fruits from your own garden is the easiest way to get them to try new things. Find books that are themed around growing vegetables and fruit!

2. Discovering Animals

Choosing to create a recipe about a character from a book can be tons of fun!

3. Traveling the World

We’ve written an entire series called Around the World in 12 Dishes that you could spend the whole summer doing!  Each country we select books to read about the country and then choose which dish we’ll create.

Here are some of our favorites.

4. Celebrating Holidays

Any time there is a special occasion we turn to books to learn about it and to see if we can make something special for the holiday. You’d be surprised how creative your kids can get!

5. Planning a Party

Getting your child involved in party planning can make your special occasion so much more meaningful and memorable. Cakes, snacks, beverages, there are lots of ways to include them.

They could even write out the menu and shopping list to build literacy in the experience.

6. Learning the Basics in Cooking

There are a few tasks that every child should experience in the kitchen.  Baking a cake, cookies and bread are my top picks.

7. Learning About Food Groups Nutrition

We’ve shared an entire series on the Food Groups that we’d love for you to use during your summer!  Each food group has a list of books to use and learn with.

8. Let’s Make a Snack

Books can inspired snacktime with the ingredients you choose or the shape you make them in. A ball can become a beach ball or a moon, a coffee cake can become a Grufflo crumble, you never know. A few sliced apples or cucumbers can make wings or a bird or a sun on a plate.

Smoothies can combine all sorts of ingredients for a special magical potion, you get the idea the ideas are endless.

9. Learning to Read in the Kitchen

One of my biggest tips is to label things in your kitchen! Whether it’s a menu, a recipe card or even the tools and foods you’re using. You can always have them reuse the labels in their play kitchen too.

Having your child surrounded by print will help to build confident readers and awareness that print has a purpose.

10. Making a Main Dish

Once your child has mastered the basic levels of assistance in the kitchen it’s time to encourage them to create a Main Dish. Look for recipes with minimal ingredients and procedures precooking. Casserole and Crock pot recipes work well for this. Then it’s off to read a chapter book while it’s cooking.

Plant some seeds and start your own food source in your garden. Here are a few tips for gardening with kids. You can read this book to get started…. Right This Very Minute: A Table-to-Farm Book About Food and Farming by Lisl H. Detlefsen

Where to start?

The first author I would start with is Laura Numeroff! Cupcakes, Cookies, Pancakes and Muffins are all pretty basic items to make with your kids and even come in boxes forms so you can focus more on following directions.

Learning Objectives:

  • Math: Following 3 step directions and measuring using standard forms of measurement.
  • Writing: Participate in shared writing experiences and create an opinion piece.
  • Reading: Make personal connections with stories.

Orange Juice Frosty Drink Recipe: Math in the Kitchen

I know this recipe may sound super simple, but my family begs to make Orange Juice Frosties at least 3 times a week. It is a great way to lower their sugar intake (the ice waters the orange juice down) and add more fluids. It is also an easy measurement activity for kids.

If you want to add a little more to this frosty beverage, add in a spoonful of Greek vanilla yogurt.

Ingredients Needed:
2 cups of your favorite Orange Juice
1 cup of crushed ice. (1 1/2 cups if using cubed)

Directions to Make 2 Ingredient Orange Juice Frosty Drink

1. Measure the ingredients.
2. Pour the ingredients into the blender. (there is less mess if you add the ice first)
3. Blend for 1 minute or until the drink is frothy and the ice is all blended. There should be no large ice chunks.

Pour into kid-friendly cups and enjoy!

Literacy Connections:

READING

Sure most of us can hop inside a cool air-conditioned building when it is hot outside, but what are some other ways to cool down on a hot summer day?  In this story, Wet Dog is OH so HOT.  He goes through the neighborhood trying to stay cool: sticking his face in the car washes watering hose, sitting near a lady fanning herself and misting roses and ends up in the lake next to a wedding party wearing fancy clothes.

In this delightful rhyming picture book, wet dog is trying everything to be cool.  My kids can relate and always get a giggle out of this book. It is the perfect read when we have just come in from a bike ride and made our Orange Juice Frosty Drinks to cool off.

WRITING

After reading, talk about ways that you can cool off on a hot summer day.

Make a group List

I wrote a list on a piece of paper as the kids made their suggestions

  • Go in the pool
  • Take a cool bath.
  • Make a paper fan.
  • Drink and icy orange drink.
  • Play with ice and water.
  • Splash in a lake.

Journal your favorite
Write down your favorite way to cool off on a hot summer day.

Encourage young writers to draw their pictures while you write down what they say.
Let older children write a paragraph explaining how they cool off in more detail.
I usually draw and write along side them as this is a great time for me to sneak in a little bit of creativity into my day as well.

Make a book
If you have several pages, assemble them together and create a homemade Our Favorite Ways to Cool Off book. Put a piece of construction paper on the top and bottom and staple the sides. Snuggle in and read it together.

We need diverse books in our home, school, and public libraries. Children must be able to “see” themselves in literature and make personal connections with stories.

I am extremely excited to once again participate and assist in hosting Multicultural World Book Day, where bloggers around the world are sharing a multicultural book and activity that you can do along with the story.

We received several books in the “I See the Sun” series from Satya House Publishing to share with you.

I see the Sun, Books for Raising Global Kids

I See The Sun Books for Raising Global Kids

We are always looking for ways to bring more Russian into our every day! My husband was born in Russia and we are trying to raise global-minded children. Imagine our delight when one of the books we were sent for MCBD was about Russia!

“I See the Sun in . . .” is a series of bi‐lingual picture books, each focused on one country and one day in the life of one child with a story told from the child’s perspective.

This series would make a great addition to a class library.  Each book includes a glossary of unfamiliar words and an overview of the country. The books can be used to facilitate discussion about other countries, different alphabets, foods, and activities. The daily life routine of each story allows children to recognize the similarities as well as the differences between their own daily
life and the culture of another place

Each book provides a unique introduction to the culture, family life and language of one particular country in a way that is age‐appropriate and sensitive to the true environment.

Each country represented in these books is one in which the author has spent a considerable amount of time, not merely as a tourist, but immersed in the culture and living with families who have opened their homes and their hearts to her.

Each book has been professionally translated by a native of the country and researched and vetted independently for authenticity and accuracy. The illustrations are collages created from original photographs, drawings, and materials such as wallpaper and fabric.

I encourage you to purchase or check one of these books out from the library and read it with your child.

Multicultural Children’s Book Day

The Multicultural Children’s Book Day team hopes to spread the word and raise awareness about the importance of diversity in children’s literature. Our young readers need to see themselves within the pages of a book and experience other cultures, languages, traditions and religions within the pages of a book. We encourage readers, parents, teachers, caregivers, and librarians to follow along via book reviews, author visits, multicultural booklist, and visit the huge multicultural book review link-up that will occur on the MCCBD website 1/27/15.

Visit The Multicultural Children’s Book Day website on January 27th to view multicultural book reviews, giveaways and more!

Finding books that reflect countries and religions that are different from your home language at times can be a challenge.  Have you considered purchasing a picture book about another country or perhaps another religion for your child?

I remember on my first trip to India all I wanted to do was purchase a few story books to bring back to my students that were based in India or even a traditional Indian story.  I searched high and low through quite a few markets and never found them. I was so disappointed. Not only for me but for the publishers who weren’t willing to publish books that reflected an entire nation that I didn’t see in the books I was picking up and this was in the central markets of New Dehli one of the biggest cities in the world.

When I look at the bookshelves in stores here it’s hard to also find books that reflect various cultures and I’m sure you are concerned about this for your own child too. It’s important that traditional books our children are asked to read at school reflect diversity in the illustrations and text to reflect the modern world.

This month we’re participating in Multicultural Children’s Book Day on January 27th!  TODAY!  Wisdom  Tales Press sent me a book to review for this special day that shared diversity.  The book is called The Dreidel that Wouldn’t Spin: A Toyshop Tale of Hanukkah by award-winning author Martha Seif Simpson illustrated by Durga Yael Bernahard.

In true holiday spirit this book shares with us what how important it is to find the true meaning of Hanukkah and I venture to say it reflects to other holiday spirits as well. As we hurry along in holiday expectations including a visit to a toy store it’s important to stop and reflect on the true spirit. This is a beautiful holiday story about the joy and happiness of  Hanukkah through the eyes of a toy store owner and one special dreidel.

I love the expressions on the toy’s faces as the toy shop owner reacts to two children who insist on owning it only to discover it wouldn’t work for them. The vibrant colors on the dreidel make me want to try to spin it to see if I know the true spirit of Hanakkah which one special boy at the end discovers.

The author includes a useful appendix that explains the meaning of Hanukkah as well as directions on how to play the dreidel game. Perfect for families wanting to add diversity to their own bookshelves and toy shelves too. Would be fun to host a playdate and provide all the guest to take home their own dreidel or even at a lesson at school. I found a few on Amazon that seem reasonable below.

Wooden Dreidels – 2 pack

Book Extensions

We extended the book by creating our own watercolor dreidels that were inspired by the beautiful illustrations in the book and the featured coloring page below.

We want to help get diversity books into the hands of kids who most need it and now we have a way to do it! The Virtual Book Drive is LIVE and can be found HERE.

They are also collaborating with Children’s Book Council to highlight wonderful diversity books and authors on an ongoing basis all year.

Multicultural Children’s Book Day Mission

Multicultural Children’s Book Day mission is to not only raise awareness for the kid’s books that celebrate diversity, but to get more of these of books into classrooms and libraries.

Mission: Despite census data that shows 37% of the US population consists of people of color, only 10% of children’s books published have diversity content. Using the Multicultural Children’s Book Day, Mia and Valarie are on a mission to change all of that. Their mission is to not only raise awareness for the kid’s books that celebrate diversity, but to get more of these types of books into classrooms and libraries. Another goal of this exciting event is create a compilation of books and favorite reads that will provide not only a new reading list for the winter, but also a way to expose brilliant books to families, teachers, and libraries.

There were instructions for making a squirrel out of origami, Some Squirrel paper dolls, how to draw a squirrel, How to make a squirrel out of leaves, and a little squirrel game to make out of an egg carton.

Love Book Package Creator: To The Moon and Back

Book: Dinosaurs Before Dark by Mary Pope Osborn

We included some paper bookmarks and miniature dinosaur toys in our package. I thought of a three different activities that go along with the book for them to choose.

The first activity is to make Dinosaur bookmarks … and then place the bookmarks in other books that they own featuring places they would like to travel (just like Jack and Annie find in the Magic Treehouse).

The second activity is to take the toy dinosaurs outside and re-create different scenes (or new ones) with them.

The third activity was to make their own DINO MATCHING GAME using the bookmarks, toy dinosaurs, and information from the book.

How to Train Your Dragon Chapter Book and Activity Package

Love Book Package CreatorPlay Dr. Mom

Book How To Train Your Dragon: How to Betray a Dragon’s Hero by Cressida Cowell
