Learn how to dye seashells with your kids. Did you know you can make your own rainbow seashells? With just a few materials you’d be surprised how easy you can dye these colorful shells with your child.

Have you ever thought about what to do with the leftover Easter egg dye that you use for eggs every year?

Rainbow Sea Shells Science Experiment

I’m going to be honest I never have until this Easter, I guess just because we’re always busy doing other things on Easter with our extended family. This year after we finished my 6 year old daughter asked me what else she could use the Egg Dye for?

I turned to the interest and found that you can color coffee filters, clothespins, yarn, and even Tie Die and paint with your leftover vinegar based egg dye.

However, we wanted something similar to eggs…

We both thought about it and this is what we came up with…Seashells

Now I’ll admit we have quite a few seashells in our sandbox from our many trips to the beach, we’re very lucky to live a few hours from the beach since all of my kids were born. So in 20 years we’re gathered quite a few and use them for playtime.

You’d be amazed at how many ways you can use seashells for imaginary play.

We’ve painted them like these Storytelling Shells but I never thought about dying them.

We brought our containers outside and gathered up our seashells. We washed them off first and let them dry out so they could absorb as much of the vinegar based dye as they could.

That’s ok we have fun playing outdoors in our gorgeous spring weather in the south this weekend.

Coloring the seashells worked out to be a great sibling activity too!

How to Dye Seashells with Kids

Once our seashells were dry we set them inside of the various colors of Egg Dye and watched to see what happened. I wasn’t sure if they would change due to their surface, so it was so much fun to observe and watch as they change. A little science and discovery at home is always a good thing!

We left them in the colored water for around 30 minutes, but honestly experiment to see the variety of results you get… it’s a science experiment with your kids so enjoy!

Here’s how our Dyed Seashells turned out, a rainbow of fun!

Did you throw your dye away already, no worries you could think about grabbing a few egg dye kits on clearance this week and making your own Rainbow Shells this spring!

I think we must just try rocks next!

What would you color next with leftover egg dye?

Get ready for summer with these super fun STEM Camp Ideas for your home. Focus on developing 21st Century Skills of collaboration, critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, communication, and more.

STEM Camp Ideas

Summer makes the perfect time for our kids to get hands-on with activities, games, and challenges that connect learning to science, technology, engineering, and math.

I really would love to see more time for our kids to simply experience STEM concepts in the classroom. These ideas would make for great monthly STEM themes in a classroom too.

What is STEM?
That’s easy STEM stands for S=Science, T=Technology, E=Engineering and M=Math.

Let’s be honest there are some skills that our kids need to know that weren’t necessarily a focus when we were kids. These 21st-century skills include media and technology literacy, productivity, social skills, communication, flexibility, and initiative.

The skills your child can learn with STEM education include problem-solving, critical thinking, decision-making, creativity, curiosity, entrepreneurship, leadership, acceptance of failure, and many other skills.

By creating your own STEM Camp at home your child will get hands-on experiences and real-world applications required for developing an innovative mind.

The ability to think critically and challenge standards is the basis of innovation.

This summer here are some fun ideas for creating your own STEM Camp at home for your child.

Each STEM Themed Camp includes suggestions for STEM books, STEM products, STEM activities, and even STEM inspired snack ideas.

STEM Camp Themes

  • The Human Body
  • Electricity & Circuits
  • Engineering
  • Chemistry
  • Coding
  • Robotics
  • Solar Energy
  • Microscopic World
  • Measurement
  • Outer Space

We’ve included several choices for STEM Camp Themes for your child.

Pick a topic that your child is most interested in first. You don’t have to do all of these, pick a few that you think will encourage your child to have fun and explore more this summer.

Each themed camp should cost less than $100 for all the supplies and you get to keep them all which is an awesome BONUS to hosting your own STEM Camp.

Keep in mind these make for really fun after-school activities too for the upcoming school year.

STEM Camp Ideas for Kids! Themed weeks for super fun ideas at home with kids.

You can use this STEM Camp Ideas table of content to quickly look at the camp designed for your child’s interests.

Just click on the theme and it will take you to that spot below to start planning your summer fun.

Owl Books for Kids

We like to start many of our adventures with a set of good books. Our nighttime collection is set in a small basket next to our favorite reading chair and consists mostly of owl books. (because I really like owls!) After lunch every day, we read together. Reading the same collection of books over and over again is great for building vocabulary and the rhythm of words.

Here are just a few of the nighttime books available that we have read.

Brainstorming Nighttime Sky Words

Make a list of things in the nighttime sky.

The first thing my preschooler says is, “ghosts.” Then he giggles.

I explained that we were talking about real things that you can see in the sky.

He said,
the moon
stars
nothing
maybe an owl.
oh yeah, and bats!

I’m thinking I may need to dig out my books on the solar system now to expand this lesson even more!

Make a Night Owl Painting

Setting paint out for our owl painting

Materials Needed:

  • Paint
  • Paintbrushes and or old toothbrush
  • Paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Pencil
Painting a nighttime owl with cool colors

Directions on how to make a night owl painting.

1. Have your child draw a large owl on the paper. Cut it out.

Sibling painting activity: Open Ended Art Owl

2. Discuss the colors of night. Introduce the concept of cool colors. Then let them paint the owl with cool colors. Look back in the books to see if the illustrators used cool colors too.

3. Using a toothbrush or paintbrush, splatter paint starts onto a black paper background.

Make the stars in the night sky with yellow paint and a toothbrush
Painting the stars in the nighttime sky

4. Glue the owl onto the background and display.

Parent Tips

Head outside if you are worried about the mess. FIY – with splatter paint, there WILL be mess!

Don’t worry if their owl doesn’t look like what you had hoped preschool art is about the process, not the product. Our project turned out completely different than what I had in mind, but they all had a ton of fun! What you see is a child project. He is 4 years old and did everything but the cutting on his own. I would have let him, but he didn’t want to wait until the paint dried and it is really hard to cut wet paint!

FALL STEM Challenge for Kids: Leaf Sculptures

Objective: This lesson will engage early childhood children (Preschool to 3rd Grade) in STEM skills to design and build a leaf structure that is more than 6 inches tall.

STEM Skills Presented in this Lesson:

Science: Children will explore their natural world and learn about photosynthesis and chlorophyll.

Technology: Watch a video clip to introduce children to the terms of color changing.

Engineering: Design and Build a leaf sculpture that is over 6 inches tall.

Math: The students will measure their leaf sculptures and record their height to the nearest inch on a group chart.

STEP 1: Nature walk and collect fallen leaves

Go on a walk. Observe the changes fall brings to the natural world.  Talk about it.

  • What colors do you see?
  • How are the leaves changing?
  • Where are the leaves?

Collect leaves of varying shapes and colors.

Teacher Notes: Even the youngest child may enjoy and learn from using correct terminology. This helps them to develop a deeper vocabulary base and understanding of scientific concepts.  It’s OK and even encouraged to use the BIG words for science.

Photosynthesis is the name for the way that plants use sunlight to make sugars for their food. Chlorophyll gives leaves their basic green coloring. As the weather cools, leaves shut down their food-making process.  The chlorophyll, the green from the leaves – leaves.

This is an ideal Fall Stem Activity for Kindergarten and Preschool

STEP 2: Video

Watch a short video clip about the colors changing in the fall. Brain Pop Leaves Video. We use Brain Pop in our classroom, but I am including a free video clip from YouTube that I felt best described the process.  It does contain ads. Sorry, I couldn’t find one without ads that was free!

STEP 3: Set up the FALL STEM Challenge

Materials Needed

FALL STEM Challenge for Kids: Building Leaf Sculptures

1. For this challenge, the children will be asked to design a fall leaf sculpture that is greater than 6 inches high.

2. Solve the challenge

First brainstorm ways that you can solve the problem.

  • Will you twist?
  • Use sticks?
  • Build a shape?

Then, try some of these ideas.

Step 4. Test your sculpture to see if it is greater than 6 inches.

If it is not, then it’s back to step 3. Brainstorm ways to make the sculpture taller and try some of those ideas.  Re-measure to see if the sculpture is greater than 6 inches.

If the sculpture is greater than 6 inches, then the child will record the data on a group T chart. This can be written on the whiteboard or chart paper. On the left will have the student’s name, and on the right, the height of their leave sculpture.

Create a Fall Bug Habitat with Mixed Art Mediums

Learning Objective

Create a bug’s environment with a variety of art mediums.

Materials Needed Air Dry Clay / Clay Crayons Watercolor Paint or Tempera Paint Nature Objects (twigs, leaves, or flowers) Paper Plate School Glue or Hot Glue (optional and adult use recommended)

Materials Needed for Fall Bug Habitat

  • Air Dry Clay / Clay
  • Crayons
  • Watercolor Paint or Tempera Paint
  • Nature Objects (twigs, leaves, or flowers)
  • Paper Plate
  • School Glue or Hot Glue (optional and adult use recommended)

Directions for Making a Fall Bug Habitat

Paint the paper plate fall bug habitat with fall colors.

1. Paint the paper plate fall bug habitat with fall colors. Discuss the time of day this setting will take place in. My preschooler decided on sunset and chose bright colors for the sky.<

2. Go on a nature walk to find a twig for the main tree of the fall bug habitat (Nature +Art = AWESOME!)

Glue a small branch or twig on to the paper plate to create the main tree trunk.

3. Glue a small branch or twig on to the paper plate to create the main tree trunk.

Recycled STEM Tube Game

Directions for Apple STEM Activity

1. Work on your preschooler’s cutting skills by having them cut a link through the cardboard tube to make it a half-circle shape.

If they are still working on these skills they can do it with you.  It’s a study surface which makes it a little bit easier to hold than paper.  You could even draw a line for them to follow to make it easier.

Tube Game for STEM with Preschoolers

2. Once you’ve cut the recycled cardboard tube you can attach the magnets to it!  This is an adult activity.  We bought the magnetic tape that had a sticky side but we couldn’t get it to stick to the recycled cardboard.

I just grabbed my glue gun and attached the pieces to that. So that my little one felt involved I had her take the white sticker paper off the backs of the magnets for me while I glued

Magnetic Tube STEM Game for Preschoolers

3. Set up the magnetic board on the wall or you can use your side of your refrigerator or filing cabinet, any large magnetic surface works for this apple stem activity!

4. Cut an apple tree out of green construction paper.  We also had some magnetic apples left from our  Magnetic Apple Math Game. We attached the green apple leaf outline with magnets to the board but you could use tape too

Now it’s time to take the APPLE STEM CHALLENGE!

Apple Themed STEM Activity for Preschoolers

5. Give your preschooler the magnetic cardboard tubes and give them this STEM Challenge.

TASK: Make the apples go into the basket from the tree using the Magnetic Tubes

You could ask them a thinking question like…

Can you pick the apples from the apple tree using these tubes to make them go into the basket?

This is a problem-solving game that incorporates science and a little bit of math since the book is 10 red apples. Your child will have so much fun with this simple STEM Activity!

Materials to build with to create an inventors box for kids

Why I Build an Inventors’ Box

Sanity. Yes, that is really the primary reason. Oh, and it does encourage my kids to think creatively to build new things.

My 4 year old son is a tinkerer. He likes to build things and take them apart. Thanks to a week long Science and Invention Summer Camp: Camp Invention, my 8 year old daughter has caught the tinkering and inventing bug too. Between the two of them, they spend many afternoons designing and creating their own inventions.

This means

1. I NEVER have any tape available for wrapping presents in the house. It seems like it is always being used for “inventions.”

2. There are little inventions EVERYWHERE in our house. In fact, my daughter just brought up the fact that there are so many that we should set out a shelf to showcase the inventions. (We’ll see about that idea).

3. I NEEDED to create an inventor’s box or I would lose my sanity with them “upcycling” anything and everything they could find into an invention. This inventor’s box has not only encouraged them to design and build, but it also stores items for building with AND solves the problem of mom’s missing tape.

The rule is, if it is in the box you can take it apart, put it together, and invent with it. If it is NOT in the box, you must get permission to disassemble it.

So What Do You Put in an Inventors’ Box?

1. First you throw in a bunch of recycled materials

Nothing spectacular is needed, just a variety of different materials that can be used for a bunch of different things.  Some ideas:

2. Next, add in Broken Toys or Toys with Parts

Anytime a toy breaks, we try to fix it. If we can’t, but it still looks like we can use it in another way, it get thrown in the inventors box.

3. Last, your inventor’s box must contain things for Attaching parts

4. Paper and Pencil (for recording designs)

Best of all, this STEM activity is FREE! You just gather every day materials around the house to create this extremely powerful, open-ended learning tool.

My kids have had their inventor’s box for over a month. We had a place-mat break apart into a ton of tiny sticks. The kids took one look at it and said, let’s put it in the inventor’s box! I love that they are looking at materials and objects with a new set of eyes, “inventor’s eyes!”

Here are how other parents built their take-apart inventors box and open ended inventors’ box for kids.

Dollar Store Stem Kit Learning Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math doesn't have to be expensive. Here is a MUST HAVE stem kit for every home and classroom.

A fun project for parents AND teachers to make.

Best for preschool – grade school kids.

Dollar Store STEM KIT

I’m affiliate linking these STEM materials to similar products on Amazon in case you are a Prime addict like me =) and prefer the supplies delivered to your door. The items pictured were purchased at our local dollar store and used by my own children.

So far, the dice, magnifying glass, and garage sale dots have been the most used items.

My 5 year old priced every single toy in our house (and my kitchen supplies) one afternoon and had a pretend garage sale. It was super cute, but we need to re-stock more stickers as they are a one-time use STEM item.

Technology

Engineering

Math

For less than $20.00, we have been building, exploring, counting, adding, and much, much more!

We set out our Dollar Store Stem Kit on the math and science table for the kids to use. We have found that this kit encourages exploration in science, math, technology and engineering in an open ended format.

My first grader goes through the stickers, tagging every toy he owns, then charges his sister the price to play with them. My 10 year old has privatised the calculator to “double check” her math problems. And my almost 4 year old loves playing card games. We’re teaching him how to sort and match the numbers with games like crazy 8 and Go Fish.
