Recycled STEM Tube Game

Directions for Apple STEM Activity

1. Work on your preschooler’s cutting skills by having them cut a link through the cardboard tube to make it a half-circle shape.

If they are still working on these skills they can do it with you.  It’s a study surface which makes it a little bit easier to hold than paper.  You could even draw a line for them to follow to make it easier.

Tube Game for STEM with Preschoolers

2. Once you’ve cut the recycled cardboard tube you can attach the magnets to it!  This is an adult activity.  We bought the magnetic tape that had a sticky side but we couldn’t get it to stick to the recycled cardboard.

I just grabbed my glue gun and attached the pieces to that. So that my little one felt involved I had her take the white sticker paper off the backs of the magnets for me while I glued

Magnetic Tube STEM Game for Preschoolers

3. Set up the magnetic board on the wall or you can use your side of your refrigerator or filing cabinet, any large magnetic surface works for this apple stem activity!

4. Cut an apple tree out of green construction paper.  We also had some magnetic apples left from our  Magnetic Apple Math Game. We attached the green apple leaf outline with magnets to the board but you could use tape too

Now it’s time to take the APPLE STEM CHALLENGE!

Apple Themed STEM Activity for Preschoolers

5. Give your preschooler the magnetic cardboard tubes and give them this STEM Challenge.

TASK: Make the apples go into the basket from the tree using the Magnetic Tubes

You could ask them a thinking question like…

Can you pick the apples from the apple tree using these tubes to make them go into the basket?

This is a problem-solving game that incorporates science and a little bit of math since the book is 10 red apples. Your child will have so much fun with this simple STEM Activity!

Red apples, yellow apples, green apples. It doesn’t matter, because my kids LOVE apples!!! They are part of our every day experiences. So how did the apples get to our fridge?

Let’s explore with these hands-on, fun Preschool Apple Theme Activities.

This week, our playful preschool theme is all about APPLES! In addition to making an apple tree sight word and counting apples, we are taking a closer look at the trip our apples took from the orchard to our table. Affiliate links. The first thing we did was…

A hands-on playful preschool activity. Social Studies lesson about apples.

WATCH: Take a Virtual Tour of an Apple Orchard and Packing Facility

Have you ever thought about how apples get from the farm to the table?  This activity combines social studies and technology for preschoolers. It allows them to visualize what happens at a packing facility.

Apples travel from the orchard to a packing facility, to a storage unit, to the store, and finally – your home!

What happens at an apple orchard?

  1. First, the apple trees are grown.
  2. In the spring blossoms form on the trees.
  3. Then, these blossoms turn into small apples.
  4. As time progresses, these apples grow and ripen.
  5. Then, starting in July, apples are harvested.
  6. Finally, the harvest continues as different apple varieties are ripe.

See how one family farm harvests the different varieties.
(This video is nice, but long for my preschooler.  We watched just a portion to see how the trees and harvest looked like)

What happens at an apple packing facility?

  1. First, the apples are weighed
  2. They are put on a convener.
  3. They are rinsed with heated chlorinated water.
  4. They are put on a rolling convener.
  5. The apples are sprayed with water and food safe soap.
  6. They are dried with a fan.
  7. Wax is applied.
  8. Apples run through a drier.
  9. Apples are hand sorted.
  10. They run through a color and size sorter.
  11. Stickers are applied to tell consumers what type of apple they are.
  12. Apples are placed in trays or bags.
  13. The trays and bags are put in boxes.
  14. The boxes are then moved to a storage facility.

Here is a video that shows this process. WARNING – my kids wanted to watch this over and over and over again.  You may want to set a limit of how many times they can watch it BEFORE you hit play!

Some apples are used to make other products such as apple sauce, apple juice, or even apple cider.

How to Make an apple orchard.

Materials Needed For Apple Orchard

Apple Tree Orchard Preschool Craft

Directions for making an apple tree orchard

1. First, adults prepare 4 rectangles for the tree trunks using the thin cardboard from the empty cereal box. Wrap them into a cylinder shape and tape for the trunk. Cut circles with the remaining cereal box. Hole punch several times close together to get a hole big enough for the pom pom to fit. This irregular shape will help hold the pom pom apples in the tree.

How to make an interactive apple tree

2. Nest, set the circles out for the child to paint green.

3. Then, when dry, assemble the trees. Cut 2 small notches into the tops of each cylinder and slide the circle tree together.

4. Finally, build the store, packing facility, storage unit and home. Use bricks, blocks or any other household materials.

Play

Re-enact the path that apples take to get from the orchard to your home. Have your child show you how the apples get from the orchard to their table at home.

Stacking Apples STEM Game for Kids

Finding a storybook that shares STEM concepts in it can be such fun.  One of our new favorite this fall is the book Ten Apples Up on Top!  by Dr. Seuss our featured book of the week for the Weekly Virtual Book Club for Kids!

It’s a perfect match to challenge your child’s thinking skills with our stacking apples game.

Grab your own copy of Ten Apples Up on Top! by Dr. Seuss
For additional Apple Themed Books Click Here

After reading this adorable story of three friends challenging each other to stack on more apples you instantly want to how many apples can you really stack on top of your head. You and I both know it’s nearly impossible to stack up 10 apples on your head but for kids who still believe in magic and have huge imaginations its’ quite possible, right?

So with the magic of a few materials, you can build your child’s imagination and creative thinking skills to make this Stacking Apples Game.

Materials:

Apple Math Game for Kids

Directions for Apple STEM Game

1. Read the story Ten Apples Up on Top!  with your child.

2. Get out the pretend apples and allow your child time to play with them and see what they do.  Before starting any new game with young children it can be helpful to give them time just to play before you begin to give them specific tasks that need to be completed.

3. After exploring the apples discuss with your child how it would be fun to stack the apples up on top just like in the storybook.  Make a STEM Challenge!  Ask your child how many they think they could stack on top of each other.

4. Create a tray area for them to explore the Apples STEM challenge. Give them the container of play dough and tell them they can use it if it will help them get 10 apples up on top, just like in the book.  Better yet give them a container of numbers and challenge them to build up the matching amount to the number they pull out from the selection.

And then wait… see what they come up with on their own as they stack the apples.

Sibling Apples STEM Game for Kids

I did this activity with both of my kids ages 5 and 10 who have different problem-solving skill sets.  They both took the STEM challenge independently and then discovered quite quickly it’s easier to work together when it gets to the really high numbers.

5. As your child builds with the Playdough and Pretend Apples encourage them to try various ways to see which one performs the best when holding up the apples to their highest point.  We were able to get to 10 apples but it took some patience and a few extra fingers to get up there.  Just like in the story as the characters used their apple tree sticks to keep them up on top.

How tall did your child’s apple stack get?

A fun way to learn about baking in the kitchen with an apple themed book for kids.

Making Mini Apple Pie with Kids

We had our first Kids Cooking Class this afternoon and we learned all about Apples!  In my cooking class, I try to incorporate literature and print as much as possible. Reading is a part of everyday life and it’s so easy to make it real with cooking.

I also teach science and math and art during cooking too! That’s what makes cooking one of the best things you can do with your child!

We read the book The Apple Pie Tree by Zoe Hall.

(Amazon affiliate links included)

This is one of my favorite books to discuss apples, seasons, changes and life cycles just by the life around a simple apple tree in the backyard.

Once we read the book I had a large sheet of paper for the chefs to decide what they thought would taste best in an apple pie. With a little guidance, we got all of our ingredients listed.

Then we discussed what types of cooking tools we would need to find to prepare our apple pie.  We found a bowl, spoon, child-safe knife, tablespoon, teaspoon, rolling pin, pie plate, and measuring cup.

I created an assorted pile of cooking terms for the girls to search through to label our items with.

Apple Pie Recipe for Kids

We used premade pie dough. You can precut circles for your child to place inside the mini pie containers

Apple Pie Filling Recipe

  1. Peel one apple and then cut in half
  2. Slice the apple into small pieces
  3. Mix 1 Tablespoon packed brown sugar
  4. Mix 1 Tablespoon white sugar
  5. Mix 1 teaspoon all-purpose flour
  6. Add a pinch of cinnamon
  7. Add a pinch of nutmeg
  8. Mix ingredients all together
  9. Put mixture into pie container
  10. Put 1 teaspoon button on top
  11. Bake for 15 minutes or until brown
  12. Enjoy

Once we established our ingredients we found the recipe with all those terms on it and read over it together as we gathered and identified our ingredients. Each chef was in charge of cutting their apple into small slices using a butter knife.

We talked about how to keep our fingers out of the way for knife safety.  (The riper they are the easier they are to cut for little hands.)

Then they added their ingredients based on the recipe to their diced apples and placed it into a miniature pie plate. We baked the pies for 30 minutes.

While we were waiting we sang a few apple songs and read another non-fiction apple book. We discussed the different kinds of apples and we taste-tested yellow, green and red apples and discussed how some are sweet and some are tart.

We created an apple art project by creating legs and arms by folding them accordion style and then attaching them with glue. Then they personalized their apple with a face.

If you have more time you could also make this Apple Pie Paper Plate Craft.

You could switch up this whole lesson to lemons with this impressive Lemon Pie!

Then it was time to enjoy our finished product!

You could also make apple pie playdough no cook to play with while your apple pies bake.

For breakfast we’re going to add a little apple fun by making Baked Apple French Toast.

This week we will incorporate some Apple Literacy projects to enforce what we learned using the songs we learned and a child created book with sight words!

Create an apple tree craft by marble painting with the kids. Can you shake the apple tree to make those apples fall? Kids will have fun creating this apple tree by rolling marbles all around as they focus on eye hand coordination skills this fall. Are you ready?

Marble Painting Apple Tree Craft

Apple Tree Craft

Do you know the song Way Up High in the Apple Tree?  This is a playful craft idea that plays on the movement portion of the song.  Your child’s doing to have tons of fun painting with marbles, which we’ll call our apples in this activity.  You just need a few items to create this apple tree craft with your preschooler and lots of movement.  Here’s how…

This post contains affiliate links to Amazon.

Apple Tree Craft Materials

Materials:

  • White Paper
  • Recycled Shoebox Lid
  • Brown Paper
  • Green Paint
  • Buttons or Pompoms
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Baby wipes (to keep the mess all tidy if needed)

The Apple Pie Tree by Zoe Hall

Click here for more Apple Book Suggestions

Directions for Apple Tree Craft:

1. Sing the song Way Up High in the Apple Tree and read one your your favorite Apple Stories with your child.  One of my favorites to read is The Apple Pie Tree

2. Next is to have some fun with the rolling apples, which we’re calling our marbles for this project.  Add plain white paper onto a recycled box lid and a few drops of green paint.

Marble Painting for the Apple Tree Craft

3. Now add the marbles, we added five just like the song, and then move the apples around the box to color the sheet of paper all green.  It takes some fine motor skills and eye hand coordination to do this, which is perfect for preschoolers.  TIP: Head outdoors if you can for any flying marbles to land on the grass in stead of your carpet.

* We alway keep baby wipes on hand for messes when painting too.

4. Allow the paint to dry after painted with the marbles.  Might be a good time to go make apple pie together.  Here’s our recipe for kids to make.  Or one of our other apple activities featured here.

Scissor skills with apple tree craft

5.   Use scissors to cute out the shape of an apple tree  For younger kids you could draw a shape with them on the back to a guide to follow.  Or you can simply cut out yourself with younger children who aren’t able to follow a line yet.  My daughter is 5 and was able with guidance to cut hers out by herself.

6. Then give your child brown paper to cute out the tree trunk of your apple tree.  or if you want ot get even fancier you could use a recycled paper roll to make it stand. Glue on to the green tree outline.

making-apple-trees-with-preschoolers

7. The final step is to add apples onto the tree.  We had some old red buttons in our button box that I had my daughter search through to find for a sorting activity.  Then she attached them to the tree with a glue stick for a fine motor activity.

For the holiday season, use this technique to make your own marble-painted Christmas tree.

Variation: You could simply paint red dots with finger prints for the apples or glue on pompoms like you see in this apple harvest post.

Apple Tree Craft Idea for Kids

Now you have an apple tree as you welcome fall!  If you can head out in your community to an apple picking farm and pick apples with your preschooler.  Here’s a video of how to harvest apples that your child might enjoy too.

Here are additional apple activities to do with your child for an apple week or apple playdate with friends.

Apple Pie Pockets Recipe for Kids
