Tips for Success for Packing School Lunches

Think about it, we need to pack a school lunch for 180 days, trust me we need resources to turn to! That’s not even counting all the other days we’re just home with our kids on the weekends and summertime.

My biggest tip as a mom of 3 and a teacher for over 10 years is to make healthy choices with your child for their lunches.

  • Get Kids Involved– The more you encourage them to be involved the more they are likely to eat what you packed. Have a few things they can help put into their lunches when you’re packing them. Click here for ideas
  • Easy Open Containers– Select containers and items that they can open independently. Sometimes that means practicing at home before hands for a few days.
  • Label Lunch Box & Containers– It’s the easiest way to ensure all your costly lunch items are returned to their owner if they get left anywhere.
  • Pack Healthy Items– Make healthy choices with the items you’re choosing, it’s brain power for your child as they are learning throughout their school day.
  • Avoid Peer Pressure– You will hear all sorts of stories about what each student is allowed to bring to school in their lunches.  Go with your instinct and pack what you know is best for your child’s health.  Many prepackaged items are packed with sodium and ingredients that our kids don’t need to consume.
  • Pick a Fun Theme– Sometimes it’s fun to pick a theme for lunch.  Cookie cutters, napkins and toothpicks can be the easiest way to add a little fun.

Teach your child about the meaning and value of the national symbols with this SUPER FUN Play-Doh Lesson!

“I participated in an Influencer Activation on behalf of Influence Central for Hasbro. I received product samples to facilitate my review as well as a promotional item to thank me for my participation.”

I try to set out  a Play-Doh invitation to play at least once a week.  This invitation to play includes a variety of colors and one or two additional materials to explore. Sometimes I include stamps, tools, small toys, beads or plastic cookie cutters.

My kids love to roll snakes and smash it through the garlic press to make fake spaghetti.  When I’m not looking, they mash it together to see what new colors they can make.

Today, we are sculpting to show our National Pride!

Join in World Play-Doh Day & Learn about National Symbols with this creative Lesson Plan for kids of all ages

Connect literacy, social studies and creative expression in this 30 minute lesson plan for kids of all ages.

World Play-Doh Day & National Symbol Lesson Plan

Join in the fun! Try this lesson with YOUR children, snap a picture and share it for World Play-Doh day.

Learning objectives:
The students will identify a minimum of 3 national symbols that are unique to our country. They will also be able to verbally explain that a symbol is something that stands for, or represents, something else.

A symbol is something that stands for, or represents, something else.

National symbols do not just represent physical objects and historical events, but thoughts, feelings, and emotions for ones country as well.

Materials Needed:

  • Play-Doh
  • 2-3 Books on National Symbols

National Symbols Lesson Plan with Play-Doh

Statue of Liberty Playdoh Sculpture

Statue of Liberty Play-Doh Sculpture

1. Read and Discuss

Sit down and read your selected books with your child.  Explain that the books are non-fiction, meaning that they tell facts about a person, place or event.

“These books are a special kind of book called non-fiction.  They were written to teach people more about a particular topic.  Today, we are learning about National Symbols.”

Talk

  • about the images and the words in each story,
  • what the pictures and words represent, and
  • why they are important to your family.

2.  Select a National Symbol

Encourage your child to select one National Symbol to sculpt with playdough.  Look at the image and examine the shapes and colors.  Remind the child that their Play-Doh sculpture will be an artistic representation of the actual item.  It is OK for it to look a bit different in size, shape, and color.

Bald Eagle Play-Doh Sculpture

Bald Eagle Play-Doh Sculpture

3.  Sculpt

Spend time creating a Play-Doh representation of a National Symbol.

Teacher and Parent Notes:

Although knowing the USA symbols is a kindergarten foundation, the review is great for older children as well!

For Younger Learners:

  • Sculpt along side, modeling how to roll and shape the Play-Doh.  Watch me do it, now you try.> Encourage the child to roll stripes. (Adult makes the stars) assemble all into one sculpture.
  • Make the sculpture together! (both contributing to the final product, not the adult doing it all!)

For Advanced Learners:

  • Consider selecting a particular state to study for older children.
  • Have them sculpt and create the state symbols such as the state’s bird, food, and flower.Have them summarize these symbols in paragraph format.
  • Encourage them to sculpt a variety of symbols and photograph each one. Print the pictures and create a mini DIY book on National Symbols.

Join in the World Play-Doh Day – September 16th!

Sculpt Share

  • a landmark,
  • cultural icon,
  • a food, or
  • patriotic symbols

Summer Muffin Tin Syllable Counting Game for Kids

Say and count syllables in this self-checking summer-muffin tin syllable counting game. Sneak in a little fine motor practice and boost early literacy skills while picking up pom poms. Fine motor practice helps strengthen muscles for writing. Challenge your fine motor skills with the addition of a grabber. It makes it just a wee bit more difficult that way. Let the kids help draw the game pieces and you tie in art and creativity too.

Focus Skill: counting syllables in spoken words

Best for Children ages 3-7.

Materials for Summer Muffin Tin Syllable Counting Game

Directions to Make the Summer Muffin Tin Syllable Counting Game for Kids

1. First, trace around the 2-inch (5-cm) circle 12 times on the card stock.

OPTIONAL = Skip 1-3 and print the free muffin tin syllable game boards here.

2. Then, draw a picture of a person, place or thing inside each circle. Cutting pictures from magazines works too! Some summer beach themed examples are: waves, shovel, shell, castle, sand dollar, pail, sandal, ball, umbrella, sun, boat.

3. Next, color and cut out each picture.

4. Finally, turn the circles over and make a dot for each syllable in the word. The back of the circle with the fence picture would have one dot; scarecrow would have two. A yellow highlighter or light pencil circles work best so they do not bleed through the paper.

Beach Fun and Learning, Make and Play this Summer Muffin Tin Syllable Counting Game
  • waves = 1 syllable
  • shovel = 2 syllables
  • shell = 1 syllable
  • castle = 2 syllables
  • sand dollar = 3 syllables
  • pail  = 1 syllable (You could use the word bucket also which is 2 syllables)
  • sandal = 2 syllables
  • ball = 1 syllable
  • umbrella = 3 syllable2
  • sun = 1 syllable
  • boat = 1 syllable
Back of Summer Muffin Tin Syllable Counting Game piece

Directions to Play the Summer Muffin Tin Syllable Counting Game for Kids

1. First, place the pictures, image side up, in the muffin tin. The player names the picture out loud and counts the number of syllables in the word.

2. Then, the player drops the same number of buttons or pom poms as syllables in the tin.

3. Next, play continues until all compartments have been filled with buttons. When this happens, the player self-checks and corrects the number of syllables by turning the picture over and comparing the number of buttons in each compartment with the number of circles on the back of the image.

For a little more literacy fun, you can also print out this summer alphabet tracing book!

Bonus Game Variations Summer Muffin Tin Syllable Counting Game for Kids

Beach Fun and Learning, Make and Play this Summer Muffin Tin Syllable Counting Game alternative: Begining sounds

Place a set of wooden or magnetic alphabet letters next to the muffin tin. Have the children place the letter that represents the word’s beginning sound on top of the picture. U for Umbrella.

Kindergarten writing starts off as letters and moves towards full simple 5 sentence paragraphs at the end of the year.

Here is one child’s progression on kindergarten writing throughout the year, a glimpse into the kindergarten writing standards, and resources for teaching writing to kindergarten.

what a year of kindergarten writing looks like

What Kindergarten Writing Looks Like

My daughter is 5 years old. As a former kindergarten teacher, writing at this stage is my absolute favorite. I find great joy in “seeing” progress through writing and I have tried to take pictures of her writing samples to create an online portfolio of her work, meaning, a post here on the blog that I can look back at and see how far her writing has come.

Although my daughter struggles with some vision and fine motor issues, her desire to write and creative imagination helps her to be a successful writer.  She is an average kindergartner with an amazing passion and zest for life.

Since she was 3, she has spent almost every day of her life writing something; a letter to Grandma, a grocery list, recipes for food, and more recently, stories.

Kindergarten Writing Sample

I am Snow White.  I am raccoon.  I am deer.

Writing Standards of a Kindergarten Student

Here is a sampling of her writing for parents who may be interested in knowing what a kindergartner can and should write like.

Our current standards require kindergartners to

  • Draft writing by drawing, telling, or writing about a familiar experience, topic or text; that is appropriate to the topic, audience, and purpose.
  • Edit for correct use of end punctuation, including periods, question marks, and exclamation points.
  • Edit for correct use of knowledge of letter/sound relationships to spell simple words.
  • Produce, illustrate and share a finished piece of writing.

Their end of the year portfolio states that they must write a paragraph about a given subject with a topic sentence and three supporting sentences.  Gone are the early stages of writing continuum that I was taught to use with early writers.

Kindergartners now have higher expectations in writing.  Although I feel that not all children may be developmentally ready for these tasks, I would like to believe that with strong parent support, our children can meet (or come close to meeting) these expectations.

Can my daughter meet and exceed all these new standards and assessments – I hope so, but realistically, I know that she is not currently quite at the stage of writing that these standards require.

Although her thoughts and ideas are expressed with creativity, she writes with energy and uniqueness, and she uses “lively” word choices, her conventions and spelling need some more attention!

Writing Samples of a Kindergarten Student

We use mostly primary writing paper that has a space for drawing pictures too.  Look for the following terms when purchasing writing paper for kindergarten students: (Click the words to view the product in Amazon)

Kindergarten Writing Sample

Hot chocolate is hot. Salad is green. But my favorite thing is …

Kindergarten Writing Sample

Ravioli, ravioli and soup, soup, vanilla, water, milk, juice

Kindergarten Writing Sample

Christmas was great.  I liked what Nicholas gave me.  It was a dog.

Kindergarten Writing Sample

The book is Hannah and the Seven Dresses.  She does not know what dress to wear.  The fourth dress has ruffles.  She put black pants on her birthday.<

Kindergarten Writing Sample

I do not like to get a shot. It hurts a lot. Oweee.

This is the first time that we start to see speech bubbles. In my kindergarten classroom, I would encourage reluctant readers to use speech bubbles.  Many kids find them interesting and motivation to write in.

She is using longer sentences in her writing now – 8 words in this one – with no adult prompting. She is capitalizing and spacing on her own! You can’t see it, but after the Owee is an exclamation point!

Kindergarten Writing Sample

This bee is a special bee. It pollinates roses.  It has wings like a butterfly.

We try to change up our writing so it does not get boring.  Writing can and should be fun and interesting. After a visit to an art festival where we talked with a local artist, I did a directed draw activity with her to make the bee and she wrote her sentences afterwards.

I really need to explore mediums other than markers, crayons, and colored pencils when creating a picture or illustration for our writing. Research has shown using art before writing, especially with water colors help improve creative writing, as the colors flow and change, creating new thoughts and writing directions. It is something for me to work on doing more!

Kindergarten Writing Sample

Once upon a time, there was an old woman. Her name was Emilesa. She was poor. (My Thing)

We have found that as the year of kindergarten progresses, the teacher asked for more specific writing tasks such as book summaries or using 3 specific words of the week. The more specifications included, the less my little one wants to write and the more she craves creative writing.

This was a little story that she wrote a few days ago after writing a book summary for her school homework, a letter to her Grandma, and 2 other stories. She sat for hours (her choice) just writing. Those are the days when I am so very thankful that we do not have a television!
