August can be such a fun time to do things with kids as you wrap up the last full month of summer, We’ve included several fun themes that just shout summer fun together with your child.

Take a moment this August to truly celebrate summer and all the special things you get to do as a kid.

You can head outdoors to enjoy these summer ideas:

Go on a nature hike
Have a picnic in the park or at the beach.
Visit a local zoo, aquarium, or museum.
Go swimming, boating, or fishing.
Have a barbecue or cookout.
Play outdoor games, such as tag, hide-and-seek, or frisbee.
Go camping or stargazing.

You can also just spend time indoors together when you:

Ice Cream Activities

One of my favorite things to do during the end of summer is to make ice cream with the kids. Here are a few fun ice cream activities, books and recipes to explore together.

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Activities

One fun little theme is the book Chicka Chicka Boom Boom to explore with your child. It’s a fun way to practice their letters and even kick off a school year as you celebrate coconut trees and more. Be sure to learn the song too!

Explore India

One holiday that is celebrated in August is India’s Independence day. India was under British rule for about 200 years. India won it’s freedom on August 15, 1947. Here are a few ways to learn more about India and celebrate this special day with your child.

Outdoor Summer Activities

August means it’s the perfect time to have some extra time to head outdoors with the kids and play. These outdoors games and nature focused activities can be so much fun to do with your child.

Summer is just about to arrive at our house and we are so excited to begin our summer fun! To get planning I spent some time making plans with my daughters for what we want to do this summer with our kids.

Summer Bucket List Ideas

Instead of creating a huge list of activities, we thought it might be fun to focus on key concepts of childhood development. We focused on these 4 four main groups for Summer Fun.

Here’s our Summer Bucket List Categories …

Play
Learn
Make
Go

PLAY – One of the most important things in childhood is time for play.

LEARN – Help you child avoid the summer gap by sneaking in learning during the summer months.
BONUS see if there is something they’d like to learn new during the break. Self-led learning can be so powerful for child. Summer reading falls into this category as well.

MAKE – Getting hands-on is crucial to your child’s development. The summer is ideal for starting projects that take a little extra time or are a little messier for your child to truly experience it. Trying out a new STEM project or recipe for kids can be a lot of fun.

GO – With a little extra time at home, summer makes for the perfect time to plan a few adventures outside of the house. We’d recommend picking an outing that ties into something you did during the week.

Using these four groups of Play, Learn, Make and Go we started to brainstorm.

My 5 year old sat down with Mommy and Daddy and created our own Summer Bucket list of things we want to do together.

I’m sure little sister will enjoy her big sister’s ideas too. I can tell that after a year in Kindergarten she’s ready for some adventures with Mommy and Daddy.

We created a Word Cloud using ABCya.com to focus on winter vocabulary words. You could also create a word cloud for the month of things to do after school with your child.

You could call it your vision board for after school. When we set goals with our kids it teaching them to learn how to do that for themselves.

Plus goal setting helps to provide structure for them and keep them less tempted from technology like the tv or videos and computer games.
